Diffraction ≉ Refraction is an electroacoustic work developed by Eric Hall as a part of the collaborative program with the highly-lauded modern chamber orchestra Alarm Will Sound at Saint Louis' Mad Art Gallery. The event also featured a sixteen-channel sound installation, solo and duo works, and additional collaborations with 18andCounting's TheOnlyEnsemble. For this piece, through electronically sampling, processing, and layering the acoustic players in realtime, the ensemble gradually builds up unexpected phrases of shifting fragments that they can further interact with in a sort of house of mirrors non-linear improvisation.
