There was a modest handful of attentive ears in attendance at the show, as well as a large group of friends enjoying their neighborhood bar like they do the same night each week, all laughing and loudly talking over each other, enthusiastically embracing the camaraderie of it all. They were good enough folks, as best I could tell, plus the kind of patrons that make a night worthwhile for both the till and the bartender.

It did not make it an opportune space to perform this kind of music in, however. Plus, neither the subwoofer for the PA or the stage monitor were turned on and I was getting a lot of interference noise from nearby neon lights – all things a soundperson would’ve caught, but we were running late, so I trusted myself to plug into the house mixer and go for it instead of soundchecking or asking for assistance from the owners.

I heard the jovial voices of the big group piled up well above what I was playing, some of which I couldn’t hear at all, while other elements looped and rattled on beyond their welcome, having been lost track of in the noise of the room and the missing low end. I was sure the set was a total bust.

Turns out, it’s still a decent enough listen, surprisingly enough.
